From 5 to 2

This is a short video clip of myself and Maddie Tagg explaining our journey, we have had many experiences with our media course this year with people leaving our group, so therefore we thought we would explain briefly how we approached the situations, we made many alterations and changes throughout our planning and filming for our AS thriller, therefore the video shortly explains how we have held up and carried on going.

Teenagers and the media

As a group myself, Maddie Tagg and Georgia Limb have created a presentation about teenagers and the media, overall it is how teenagers are represented through many different programmes and the general information on teenagers. This relates to our physiological thriller as our target audience are 15 year olds and above, therefore they need to be mature enough to understand the plot and the dangers. Hope you enjoy!

Our Audience

I have made a Prezi presentation on our audience for our psychological thriller opening. Hope you enjoy!

How music changes the feel

I have studied how different types of music can change the feel in the way the movie is perceived. I have made a short clip showing a slow motion shot of my friend going down a slide on a pedlo whilst we was on holiday. I have used Happy music, Heroic music, Sad music and scary music to show how the music is used to show the mood and feel of the event. I made this clip using iMovie on my phone and used the songs provided and my songs. Music is key in a film or any time of video, this is because it clearly portrays the feel and what type of mood they are trying to create. For example scary music with suspense is usually used in horror films to create a tense atmosphere to the rest of the film. This has helped me with developing the sound on our physiological thriller as the music and sound effects need to be very fast and tense to build suspense to the kidnapping scene. Using different styles of music is used to manipulate our emotions and perhaps lead us down the wrong path. The second example wasn't created by myself, however through my research I found it, and it is a great example of how music can play on our minds.

One Page Pitch

This is our one page pitch which reveals the ideas and rough story lines our psychological thriller is going to involve, and some of the mains events which happen in our opening. Some of our ideas may change and be different, this is only to improve our first idea also we may have some problems therefore we need a second idea, but this is our plan so far.

As Thriller Marks

As part of learning how to improve our planning for our thriller trailer, we watched some examples of other AS thriller trailers and following the mark scheme we marked what we thought it would have scored.

The first clip we watched was impressive and followed high marks on the criteria with a mark of 54/60. It included titles appropriately and had a good consistency throughout with the same font and size and also the producers made sure that the titles all had a eligible time (so people could read them). There was also very good sound use with images and editing, especially using contrapuntal sound. The voice over was key in this clip, and it was clear that it was planned what was going to be said as it was very creative. I would consider using this in out final piece as it looked and sounded great. The only thing I would consider not so good was the story line, it wasn't very hooking or engaging. Overall this piece was marked at top grade A.

On the second clip we watched me and my group gave it a score of 36 which is a grate C, However the examiners gave it a mark of 44 which is equivalent to a grade B. We gave it this mark because the start was very good with the sound with the images and the editing, however when the acting and dialogue came along it was as impressive, me and my group understand its not about the acting but it does have a massive affect on the final piece and it doesn't give off the correct feeling.

Altogether we watched 4 As thriller clips and they were all very good and showed a remarkable talent throughout. The whole class had to watch and score these clips, however on some trailers, we all gave the clip a D which is equivalent to 30 marks however the exam board marked it at an A, therefore non of us was correct.

Through watching the As thriller trailers it has allowed me and my group to identify how ours can be made better and what we need to do. For example, we liked the idea of the voice over on one of the clips, and we also have learnt that we need to keep our font sizes and styles the same and keep continuity through our piece. Overall the clips were all very impressive and helped us with ideas and editing skills for our own AS thriller opening.

A-48 - These are the marks from the exam board and I followed these marks too.
B-42
C-36
D-30
E-24

defining the audience

Uses and Gratification

In 1974, Bulmer and katz developed this theory. This theory suggests that audiences use media texts (any) for various reasons: various reasons are below.

Diversion (escapism) - to escape from everyday life.
Personal relationships (social interaction) – use the media texts for emotional and other interaction e.g. substituting soap operas for family life.
Surveillance (informative) – To gain information and knowledge.
Personal identity – to create their own identity from characteristics/celebrities in media texts, and learning behavior and values.
Entertainment - As a means of relaxation, enjoyment and emotional release. Purely for the 'fun' of the experience.
Effects/ Hypodermic model
This is some information about how the audience are feared by the effects of media, the theories suggest that the audience are influenced from watching the media.
Perhaps the most simple to understand is the hypodermic syringe this has been very popular down the years with many people who fear the effects of the media. It grew out of what is referred to as The Frankfurt School, a group of German Marxists in the 1930s who witnessed first-hand how Hitler used propaganda to influence a nation. The Communists in the Soviet Union had a similar impact.
According to the theory the media is like a syringe which injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience who as a powerless mass have little choice but to be influenced – in other words, you watch something violent, you may go and do something violent, you see a woman washing up on TV and you will want to do the same yourself if you are a woman and if you are a man you will expect women to do the washing up for you.
